FOR AGES 3 YEARS TO 12 YEARS
Walkie talkies make for excellent gifts for children of all ages.
They're both fun and practical, and are appropriate whether younger kids want to pretend to be secret agents, or older ones want a proper adventure in the great outdoors. There are also quality products in a variety of price ranges, to suit any budget.
Walkie talkies for kids tend to be designed slightly differently than those for adults - for grown-ups, the maximum range of a walkie talkie can be up to 50 miles, but children's usage of walkie talkies or two-way radios tends not to require quite that much distance. A good kids walkie talkie would have a simple push to talk button, be slightly smaller to fit their hands, and have additional safety features. With that in mind, if you're looking to buy a top quality kids' walkie talkie, here's ten to consider.

These Kearui walkie talkies are the current best sellers in their category and have got excellent reviews to back up the sales figures. We think they're the best walkie talkies for kids. You can get them in three different designs, each of them in a solid, durable plastic shell. A nice feature with these is a headphone jack, which means you can talk into them without even taking it out of your pocket if you've got earbuds plugged in. This appears to have a smash hit with every child who got one, and £16.99 is a super price for a product of such high quality.
EUToyz have produced a walkie talkie that is easy to use, high quality, and matches the Kearui for price. The sound quality from these is particularly crisp, to the point where you could mistake them for proper, sophisticated grown-up walkie talkies. They also come with a built-in flashlight on the top, which sounds basic but is actually an incredibly useful addition. Again, at £16.99 you can't go wrong here.
Motorola are a recognisable, high-quality brand, and the Talkabout T42 is one of their most affordable options. There are three main selling points with these. The first is the price, which is less than half of the other Motorola products that will feature on this list. The second is that they're designed to be easy for children to use – there's an 'easy pair' button which immediately syncs up all the radios in the pack, so they can communicate straight away with whoever they need to, and they're also the perfect sized for kids to grip comfortably. The third is that they come with a pack of stickers, so the body of the radios can be personalised! Kids will love that option.
These brand new Peppa Pig walkie talkies are, as you'd expect, specifically designed for younger children. They're also the first of many on the list from the excellent Argos walkie talkies range. They're marketed as suitable for 3 years and over, and are meant to be intuitive for small hands. The Peppa Pig design means children will outgrow them, and a range of 100m (assuming perfect weather conditions) is another thing that stops them from being taken seriously as proper walkie talkies. But take them as what they are, which is a fun toy for young children that enhances playtime, and these would make for a perfect little Christmas gift.
If your child is a Toy Story fan, then a walkie talkie with Buzz Lightyear on the front should be very exciting for them – perfect for enhancing intergalactic adventures. Beyond the movie tie-in, though, it's also a very well made walkie talkie, ideally suited for younger children. It's easy to use, with a simple 'push button to talk' system, and the sound quality is crisp and almost static-free. Reviews do tend to pretty consistently bring up that it's on the quiet side for a walkie talkie, but if small children are using it that isn't necessarily a problem.
Ah, the ubiquitous Frozen! Aspiring Annas and Elsas can chat away to their heart's content over a range of up to 100m with these. There's an adjustable volume setting, and a push to talk button to make communication easier. That's about it as far as bonus features, but as soon as you put Frozen on something, you'll have won some hearts already. And the reviews for them are glowing – they work well, and the branding goes down a treat. They're also cheaper than both the Toy Story and Peppa Pig ones, which is impressive considering their apparent quality.
These walkie talkies for kids come in at £79.99, so you'd hope they're really good. And they are! The price reflects the fact that these are aimed at a slightly older, more adventurous child. They're waterproof, have a long battery life, an advertised range of an enormous 10km, and come with a built-in flashlight and a dedicated emergency warning button, so they're perfectly suited for exploring the great outdoors. If you are buying for a younger child, the excellent build quality isn't exactly going to hurt, if they have a slightly more... energetic user. If you're not perturbed by the price point, these are an excellent option.
If you're reluctant to spend close to three figures on a walkie talkie, the Binatone Latitude 250 is a much more affordable option that offers comparable quality to the Motorolas. A 5km range means they'll still come in handy for most outdoor use, and the sound quality is crystal clear. They're not quite as simple for children to use as some of the other options in this list, but they'll pick it up soon enough, and it's no reason to overlook these walkie talkies.
VTech produce a lot of super cool, one of a kind products to help create tech-savvy kids, and so you'd suspect their walkie talkie would be a good one. The big bonus with the KidiGear is that it relies on a digital connection, rather than transmitting over radio waves, which means there's no danger of your children inadvertently picking up any rogue communications over their walkie talkie. The range is 650ft, and they also come preloaded with some simple games, pre-stored messages, and sound effects. All this makes it a great option for children around the 5-year-old mark.
The camouflage outer shell of these will particularly appeal to children who want to use these for outdoor adventures. These also come with a VOX hands-free communication mode, which doesn't require headphones to use. You can turn that feature on and off as you need it, and it makes a big difference. These are £16.99, which seems to be the going rate on Amazon, and it's a pleasant surprise that there are so many well thought out walkie talkies available for an affordable price.
