It has been used as a philosophical language within the religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Sanskritic language is a standardized dialect of the ancient Indo-Aryan people. It originated – as the Vedic Sanskrit language – as early as 1700-1200 BCE.

Sanskrit is a classical language of Southern Asia belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European dialects. It arose in Southern Asia when its precursor languages had been subtle in the northwest region within the late Bronze Age. It was a link language in ancient and medieval South Asia. Upon transmission of Hindu and Buddhist culture to the geographical area, which is in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Central Asia within the early medieval era, it became a language of faith and high culture, and of the political elites in a number of these regions. As a result, the Sanskritic language had a long-lasting impact on South Asia and East Asia, particularly in their formal and learned vocabularies.

Vedic documents represent the dialects then found within the northern midlands of India and areas directly east thence. The earliest texts—including the Rigveda (the Vedic literature composed in verses) that scholars usually attribute to roughly 1500 BCE—stem from the northwestern part of the landmass, the realm of the traditional seven rivers (Sapta Sindhavaḥ).
