FOR AGES 3 YEARS TO 16 YEARS
A child's imagination is boundless, and, given the right toys, kids can dream up all sorts of things.
A toy castle is the perfect toy to promote imaginative play as it can provide the backdrop to all sorts of fanciful adventures, and will delight lovers of fairytales and knights, dragons and quests, princes and princesses. It's the sort of toy that has been enjoyed by children for generations, and, when well cared for, can provide years of enjoyment.
We've gathered together a range of the best kids' castle toys so that you can find the one your child will love the most. Personally, we love the old-fashioned wooden variety, which look lovely, will last for years and make more environmentally-friendly playthings. But there are plenty of different kinds to choose from; from knights' castles to fairy castles, traditional to themed, readymade to build-it-yourself, we've got a toy castle for every taste.
Peruse our list and find the best toy castle for your child. They'll love you for it.

This beautiful wooden castle toy from Melissa & Doug had to be our top choice. It's a proper, traditional style made from top-quality wood and hand-painted with an authentic wooden drawbridge, bricks, beams, archways and flags. Fold it out and there are tons of windows, passageways, towers and rooms for toy knights and other figures to play out all your child's fairyland fantasies in. A lovely toy that will last for years.
Yes, it may be fictional, but Hogwarts is one of the most famous castles of the modern era, and fans of the Harry Potter series will get such a kick out of recreating it by hand. This enormous Lego set is made up of an impressive 6020 pieces (hours of enjoyment!) and the finished thing is amazingly intricate. Potter devotees will love spotting thoughtful details like Hagrid's hut, the Chamber of Secrets and the Whomping Willow. Smaller wings of the castle are available separately if you don't want to fork out £350 (and we wouldn't blame you).
This miniature wooden medieval castle is the perfect fort for kids under eight. There's no assembly, it's much more affordable than the more elaborate models and it's nice and small, perfect for little hands. Like the bigger version it's beautifully designed and painted, and it also comes with 6 figurines (two horses, two knights and a king and queen) and several accessories so kids can immediately get playing. The handle makes it easy to carry and transport and the whole thing folds up neatly for easy storage.
This VTech Toot-Toot Kingdom Castle is ideal for younger children; it's made from plastic, there are no sharp edges and the bright design is immediately appealing. There are tons of interactive elements to provide sensory stimulation, too: press the coloured buttons to activate sounds, songs and phrases, light up the castle staircase or watch Princess Poppy and Prince Louis dance on the spinning dance floor. With a host of cute characters and accompanying accessories, this toot toot castle is sure to delight.
This magnificent Lego replica of the iconic Disney castle is made up of 4080 pieces and makes for an absorbing build. Micky and Minnie make an appearance, naturally, and when built the castle is full of film references that are super fun for fans to spot. Lego recommends this set for teens 16 and over, but we see no reason why younger kids can't get in on the fun, with adult supervision.
This wooden fort castle toy from Le Toy Van is the perfect introductory castle for little ones. It's not too expensive and it's got everything a castle should have: a retractable portcullis entrance, arrowslit windows from which to fire at the enemy and colourful flags flying proudly from the battlements. It's ethically produced and made from good, sustainable wood and it comes with a sticker set so your child can personalise it with cannons, shields and even a fire-breathing dragon. Accessories can be bought separately.
If your child loves nothing more than to set up their own miniature battlefield, this is the castle for them. The castle itself is interactive and designed to look like a lion, with a fearsome jaw that opens and closes to admit entry and sound-effects to match. With ferocious warrior figurines and disc-firing crossbows guarding the entrance, enemy troops won't stand a chance!
If you're looking for a castle playset that will allow young kids to exercise problem solving and improve fine motor skills these wooden toy castle building blocks are perfect. The 75 piece set comes together to create a fine palace complete with many turrets, towers and archways. A particularly good option for younger kids who don't have the dexterity or the attention span to play with a proper castle yet.
KidKraft specialise in traditional wooden toys of a high quality and this magical princess castle is no exception. With beautifully-painted pink castle features, whimsical creeping plants, sweet little ladders, shutters and balconies, this castle is sure to become the treasured centrepiece of any fairytale-lover's bedroom. It comes with a royal doll family and accompanying accessories and the towers can be removed for better access when playing with them. Just note that this one needs to be assembled at home before the kids can start playing!
It carries a hefty price tag, but this Playmobil knights' castle has got the features to back it up. Complete with authentically damaged castle drawbridge (which seems to have had a cannon blasted through it!), firing canons, secret staircase, trap door and a hidden space for hiding a treasure chest there's no end of special interactive features to spark your child's imagination. Includes plenty of accessories and three knight guards to defend the fortress.
