His personal experiences while working at the Daily News may have been reflected in his later works on the fictional 'Mr. Dooley'. Dunne's works were not controversial. In these, Martin Dooley introduced a salon keeper who commented on politics and society in a richly written Irish brogue. His sketches began to be nationally circulated after the success of 'Mr. Dooley's' comical observation of George Dewey's victory at Manila in 1898.

Furthermore, Finley Peter Dunne has written more than 700 'Dooley' essays. Some of those were published in eight volumes between 1898-1919. After completing his studies, he covered sports and police courts for various newspapers. This led Finley Peter Dunne to gain a job as an editor for a local newspaper at 21. This was the place where he met Mary Ives Abbott, who became his mentor.

He came up with the first sketch of 'Martin Dooley', initially named 'Colonel McNerry', which was inspired by a witty and humorous saloonkeeper named James McGarry.
