Method

Let’s start with the sponge! We’ve chosen a chocolate sponge for this recipe, because let’s face it, who doesn’t love chocolate?

1) Start by preheating the oven to 190C/170C fan/Gas Mark 5.

2) Grease and line your two cake tins using butter and baking paper.

3) Using an electric whisk (or handheld whisk if you don’t have one) beat together the unsalted butter and caster sugar. Whisk until the consistency is light and creamy and the mixture is light in colour. Then, mix in one large egg and whisk until combined.

4) In a separate bowl, sift the self raising flour and cocoa powder with a pinch of salt. Give it a mix then add a third of this to your bowl with the wet ingredients.

5) Combine the mixed ingredients together, add one more egg and combine.

6) Add in the remaining dry ingredients along with one more egg. You should have a smooth, thick cake batter but if the mixture is too stiff then add a splash of milk and give it a good stir to help it soften.

7) Transfer the cake mixture into your cake tins, ready to bake your Peppa Pig cake. Divide the mixture equally between the two tins and then smooth the top with the back of a metal spoon.

8) Bake your cakes in the oven for 20-25 minutes until they’re springy to touch and baked through.

9) Remove the cake tins from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tins before transferring to a wire rack.

Now for the chocolate buttercream for your Peppa Pig cake.

10) Melt 50g of milk chocolate either in the microwave in 30-second bursts or in a bowl over simmering water. Once melted, put it aside to cool.

11) Beat 85g of softened unsalted butter together with half of the 175g icing sugar in a bowl until the mixture is light and fluffy. Add the remaining icing sugar, the melted chocolate and mix it all together. If the icing is a bit too runny then just pop it in the fridge to set a little.

12) Now to assemble your Peppa Pig birthday cake! Put a small spoonful of icing onto a plate or cake stand and then place one of the cakes on top. Cover the top of the cake with icing, leaving about 1cm around the border. Now place the second of your cakes onto the top and spread the remaining icing over the top - this will be your muddy puddle!

13) To make the green grass topping, beat sifted icing sugar and butter together in a bowl. Add your food colouring a little at a time until you’ve reached your desired colour. Add 2-3 tablespoons of boiling water and beat until you have a smooth consistency.

14) Fill the icing into your piping bag then start adding some grass piping around the top edge of your cake, leaving space in the middle for your muddy puddle and Peppa Pig cake figures.

Peppa Pig Cake Decorations

Now, let's turn your cake into a Peppa Pig masterpiece!

If you have some small Peppa Pig figures in your toy box, these make the perfect Peppa Pig cake toppers. Clean them thoroughly and stand them up on the top of the cake ready to splash in the chocolate buttercream muddy puddle! Why not pop a little bit of the buttercream on their hands and face to make it look authentic? Use figures of your child's favourite Peppa Pig characters to personalise the cake to their tastes.

Want more chocolate? Simply ice the edges of your cake and stick on some Kit-Kat bars around the edge to look like a garden fence and make your Peppa Pig cake even more chocolatey!

Why not add a few mini iced flowers on top of the grass to add a bit of colour to your Peppa Pig muddy puddle cake?

If you want to change this to a George pig cake then you could swap out the figures and make your own George pig out of fondant icing. Simply roll out some pink and blue icing, use a pencil to trace the shape and cut with a sharp knife.

Tips And Recommendations

Set aside a good hour to make and decorate your cake, especially if little hands are helping! Children from the age of two years will love to help mix the ingredients but save the decorating for older children as this is a little more tricky.

This Peppa pig cake cuts around 10-15 slices. For children, we would only recommend small servings due to its sugar content.

If you want to make the cake suitable for guests with allergies then you can switch out some of the ingredients, for example, using gluten-free flour or vegan butter.

We’re pretty sure that there won’t be any cake leftover, but if there is, you can freeze it to save for another day. Freeze the cake uncovered for one hour, then wrap in two layers of cling film followed by a layer of tin foil and pop it back in the freezer. Your cake will be good for up to two months.
