'The Count Of Monte Cristo' is a novel written by Alexandre Dumas which follows the study of a betrayed human psyche.
The story revolves around the close study of the themes of justice, hope, mercy and vengeance. It follows the story of a person betrayed by his rival who ends up getting imprisoned wrongfully before gaining enough fortune to take his revenge.
In the book, the Count of Monte Cristo eventually gets revenge on Villefort by revealing his deepest secret to the public. The story is set during the fall of Napoleon's Empire. The story's premise was said to be inspired by a real-life story of a shoemaker who went on his own vengeful journey full of difficulty at this time. The novel was critically acclaimed and received great words of praise from readers all around the world. Even famous English writer, George Saintsbury called the novel one of the most popular books in Europe.
