Bill Moyers joined the North Texas State College in Denton, Texas to study journalism. Later, in 1954, US Senator Lyndon Johnson employed Bill Moyers as his summer intern. After some time, Johnson promoted him to the manager of his personal mail. Eventually, he went on to write for 'The Daily Texan' newspaper after he joined the University of Texas at Austin. A couple of years later, in 1956, Bill Moyers completed his graduation and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree to embark on his journalism career. During his stay in Austin, Bill worked as the assistant news editor at the KTBC radio and television stations owned by Lady Bird Johnson. Bill later joined the University of Edinburgh in Scotland during 1956-57 where he studied the issues of state and church. A couple of years later, in 1959, Bill completed his Master of Divinity degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary located in Fort Worth, Texas. He had further plans to enter into a Doctor of Philosophy program in American Studies at the University of Texas.

Prior to joining the University of Texas, Bill Moyers had already begun taking baby steps toward his journalism career. He worked as a cub reporter at the age of 16. After some time, Bill went on to work as a summer intern for U.S. Senator Johnson. During 1960, Bill acted as a liaison between the Democratic presidential nominee, U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy, and Democratic vice-presidential candidate Johnson. Bill later became a part of the Kennedy administration as he was the first associate director of public affairs and later went on to become the deputy director.
Following Kennedy's assassination, Bill became the special assistant to Johnson from 1963-1967 and managed to simultaneously become the press secretary of the White House. After parting ways with Johnson in 1967, Bill stepped back into the world of journalism working at Newsday from 1967-1970. Surprisingly, during his time at Newsday, Bill Moyers lead the publication towards success by winning a couple of Pulitzer awards but was criticized by the conservative owner of the publication for covering the Vietnam war protests. Bill was a democrat and parted ways with Newsday during the 1968 election as the publication owner, Guggenheim, had opposite political views and supported Nixon for the presidential elections.

Bill is also the recipient of the Charles Frankel Prize for his contributions to America's cultural life. Interestingly, the Charles Frankel Prize is today known as the National Humanities Medal.
