While studying in grade four, he became interested in music bands like Alkaline Trio and New Found Glory, which were introduced to him by his babysitter. So, we can rightfully say that he set the foundation of his musical career during his high schools day. While in high school, Blackbear was the lead singer of the rock band Polaroid, which was based in Florida. The band released many hit songs as part of an EP, a demo, and one album. Blackbear wanted to work independently and start a solo career, where he would have that freedom to write his songs.
