What are the Hill Close Gardens?

Hill Close Gardens is actually a group of 18 Victorian gardens that have survived in Warwick of England. They were prepared in the 19th-century to overlook Warwick Racecourse and to provide gardens to the townhouse owners on the hillside who did not have their own gardens. Some of those were rented, while others were owned by families for generations. A wall or a hedge enclosed each garden with a gate to ensure privacy.

Most of these gardens had a summer house and a beautiful view. The summer houses were made so that the families could stay in the gardens in any weather conditions. After World War II, only one or two gardens remained in use. The '50s saw Warwick District Council buy the plots to renovate the hillside and in the '60s, the plots were designated for social housing.

Four of the houses were listed as having historical significance in 1994 and in 2000, when a committee was formed to restore the gardens to their old glorious status. The Trust still operates the gardens and it opened to the public in Easter of 2007.
