About Ranger's House In London

What is Ranger's House?

Ranger's House is a red brick Georgian mansion located in Greenwich Park on the southeast side of London. This is a medium-sized house constructed in the Palladian style. The building found in Blackheath houses the Wernher Collection of Art. The mansion was earlier known as Chesterfield House. However, the current name comes from the house being the official residence of the Ranger of Greenwich park for most of the 19th century. From 2002 to date, the mansion has housed the Wernher Collection which is a collection of works of art collected by Sir Julius Wernher.

The building was built in the southeastern end of Greenwich Park in 1699 for Captain Francis Hosier. The mansion is made with red brick and cream Portland stone. After Hosier, the mansion was bought by Philip Stanhope, then Richard Hulse, and it was turned into a 'Grace and Favour' residence in 1815. The last ranger to live here left in 1896 and subsequently, the house was sold to London County Council in 1902. This building is now cared for by English Heritage. English Heritage has taken responsibility since 1986.
