About The Guildhall Art Gallery

What is the Guildhall Art Gallery?

The art collection of London is kept here in the Guildhall Art Gallery. You will find the museum in Moorgate in the capital city of England. The museum is located near the historic Guildhall and is connected internally to the art gallery. The museum building is made in a stone structure in a semi-Gothic design, similar to the Guildhall. Since 1670, portraits have been commissioned and collected by the City of London Corporation. The art collections grew in numbers through donations and gifts which included historic paintings and many other art collections of the 19th century and the 20th century. To display the collection through exhibitions, the first gallery was constructed in 1885. However, 164 paintings, prints, watercolours, drawings, and many sculptures were lost as the building was destroyed in the 1941 Blitz. A gallery was built in 1985. Richard Gilbert Scott, a British architect, designed the new building in a postmodern style. The new art gallery was built in 1999 to showcase and keep a collection of 4000 items.
