About 'Dirty Dancing'
What is 'Dirty Dancing' about?
With great performances from the cast, 'Dirty Dancing' is back at the West End after a previous couple of phenomenal runs, four successful UK tours, and numerous international productions. The stage is ready to be set on fire as dancers will rule the city of London.
The story revolves around Johnny and Baby. Frances 'Baby' Houseman is 17 years old in the story and the scene is set in the summer of 1963. Baby is going to learn some important life lessons while also learning a few things about dancing. With her elder sisters and parents, Baby goes on a vacation to the Catskill Mountains in New York. There are some resort activities there, but Baby is not interested in any of those and instead finds an all-night dance party at the staff quarters of the resort. She finds her own entertainment and is shell-shocked by the beautiful dance moves and the fantastic music playing at the party. She can't wait to be a part of it, and more so when she gets a glimpse of the resort dance instructor Johnny Castle. She becomes the leading lady of Johnny, both on and off the stage and the two independent young spirits now bring together the most challenging and inspiring summer of their lives. A family holiday turns into something else. The story is almost based on true events as the character Baby is similar to the co-producer and writer Bergstein. She also went to the same resorts in the Catskills and was mesmerized by the dancers.
The history of this stage production smells of success as it first opened at the Aldwych Theatre of London in 2006 making it the fastest-selling show in the history of West End. There was a five-year run of the show in the theatre which made it the longest-running show ever at the Aldwych Theatre. After its production in Australia in 2004, 'Dirty Dancing' had productions in Canada, the USA, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Hong Kong, South Africa, Singapore, and many countries in Europe. The show had fantastic runs in all of the places and the classic story made new records every time it open somewhere. Tickets were sold at a rapid rate and bookings were always full.
There are 35 hit songs to be played and danced to in this production. Some of them include songs like 'Hungry Eyes', the heart-stopping '(I've Had) The Time of My Life', and 'Hey Baby, Do You Love Me?'. Are you ready for singing along and dance to these famous tunes? Free form dancing is seen in the play.
The story of 'Dirty Dancing' is well known from the 1987 film, which starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, and it was a rousing success. Now, it is time to enjoy the stage version. 'Nobody puts Baby in the corner' is the most famous line from the story.
