Seed For Museums Day

The idea of the international day for the museum was inspired by the framework that was developed at the meeting and gathered by the ICOM community meeting. The meeting was named Crusade for Museums to discuss museums and education.

1977

International Museum Day

International Museum Day was created by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

1992

First Annual Theme Adopted

To promote museums' role and increase awareness, annual theme-related events and activities are conducted every year. The first annual theme was adopted in 1992.

2009

ICOM Partnered WFFM

International Museum Day attracted the participation of 20,000 museums, hosting events in more than 90 countries. In 2009, ICOM partnered with the World Federation of Friends of Museums (WFFM) to promote the event.

2011

Multilingual IMD Posters

In 2011, the official IMD poster was translated into 37 languages. And by 2014, 35,000 museums from 140 countries took part in IMD.

There are four objectives you can follow to honor the day. Firstly, advocate for museums among the local, regional, and national authorities by letting them know about your activities and spreading awareness to the general public about why reimagining the future of museums is important.

Since 1977, all the museums have been invited to participate and promote the role of museums in the world by organizing events and activities focused on every year's theme. So, participate in those events and exhibition trips conducted by the museums.

Some national organizations also organize free trips to visit museums which can be related to farming, space, fashion, archeology, art, culture, history, and more.
