Lucas

The Greek name ‘Loukás’ can be credited for the origin of this name. Lucas is the Latin version of Loukás and hence the meaning of Lucas is ‘the man coming from Lucania’. Lucania was a region in the south of Italy, which was ruled over by the Lucani tribe. The Lucanis' name is taken from the Greek word for wolves ‘lykos’. The wolf was an important animal for the tribe, as it had guided them during their nomadic journey. Their name was also taken from the Latin word ‘lucus’, which meant ‘a sacred grove’. Some translate the meaning of Lucas to be ‘the illuminator’, ‘the light giving one’ or ‘the bright one’. There is a saint called Saint Luke who is honoured as Saint Luke the Evangelist, as he is one of the authors of the third gospel of the New Testament. The name Lucas is most commonly found in Sweden and the Netherlands.
