About The Phantom of the Opera

What is The Phantom of the Opera about?

The Phantom awaits at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. The theatre welcomes The Phantom of The Opera for its 35th anniversary in the West End of London. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber made this fabulous smash-hit musical about a sad story of a masked and deformed mystery man. The tale is about this mystery man's obsession with a beautiful young singer named Christine Daaé. The mystery man is a musical genius living beneath a Paris opera house. As the story opens in Paris in the year 1911, the contents of the Paris Opera House are being sold by an auctioneer. The same auctioneer tells us the story of the Phantom and the thrilling tale which transports viewers back to the old days.

The musical mystery man, the Phantom, hides in the shadows of the opera house in Paris, and not many people ever see him. Most people even think that the Phantom is a ghost. Soon, a young singer, Christine Daaé, catches the mystery man's eye and the story becomes a tale of love and tragic drama. There is a rival for Christine's love in the form of a man named Raoul. This takes the Phantom on a path towards revenge.

Christine Daaé is suddenly put on the stage of a troubled production in an opera setting. It is set in the evenings of the beautiful city of Paris. The stunning voice of beautiful Christine engulfs the whole crowd. Her voice is the result of her secret teacher, the Phantom, who lives beneath the theatre. Christine takes the lead in the opera, and the Phantom starts falling in love with the beautiful singer. The Phantom slowly starts to show himself and come out of the shadows, but the main question is, is he revealing too much?

The mystery man, the Phantom, discovers that Christine loves Raoul, her fiancée. Unable to accept this, the Phantom decides to tear the lovers apart and starts planning a way to do so in his dark lair. He promises to destroy everything they love unless Christine submits to him and becomes his love. The story is all about revenge and the struggles that come with love. He is ashamed of his physical appearance, but his love for Christine is so pure and intense that his heart is unable to resist the urge to reveal himself.

Christine eventually takes off the Phantom's mask in a state of rage, asking to see his face. Quite a few people have speculated that the Phantom is perhaps suffering from a disease; however, the reason for his disfigurement goes back to his mother, who was a singer at the opera when she became pregnant with him. She drank poison, but it didn't work. It is also speculated that the story is loosely based on different historical events. Watch this musical to connect the dots and find out how this story ends.

Christine adopts the name 'Little Lotte'. This is the name of a character in the popular poem by Andreas Munch, called 'A Child's First Sorrow'. Christine and Raoul used to read it before the death of her father.
