Based on the Disney's The Lion King, this theatre adaptation transports you to the heart of Africa with rousing rhythms and songs. With stunning animal costumes and special effects, you will delight as graceful gazelles, beastly buffalos and heckling hyenas leap from the stage and scurry up and down the aisles.

Set in the heart of Africa, this Disney classic follows the story of Simba, a young lion prince, as he learns from his father Mufasa about his regal responsibilities. King Mufasa is idolised by his son, but bitterly plotted against by his brother and former heir, Scar. When Scar's evil plans to claim the throne for himself end up in tragedy, Simba exiles himself out of shame. Eventually, Simba knows he has to find his way back to his rightful place. Helped by his two loveable friends, Timon and Pumbaa, and the love of fellow lion Nala, Simba must learn to grow up, save Pride Rock and finally face his own royal destiny to become king of the Pridelands.

The team of designers behind The Lion King have taken inspiration from cultural influences to mimic the vibrant colours and rich landscapes of the African savannah. The show's epic set design, huge cast and enthralling rhythmic numbers create a seriously special visual experience that will delight children and adults alike and engross you in the world of the savannah. A hugely talented cast of more than 40 actors, singers and dancers tell Simba's story, and this beloved Disney animation is brought to life on stage through ingenious puppets, striking masks and the most intricate animal costumes. Its Broadway counterpart has won an astounding six Tony Awards, while the London production has earned its own share of critical acclaim, including two Olivier Awards for Best Theatre Choreographer and Best Costume Design.

What to know before you go

  • Performance times vary. Performances run for 2 hours and 30 minutes, including an interval.
  • Children under the age of 3 will not be permitted into the theatre. Booster seats are not available.
  • The wildebeest stampede and consequent death scene during the performance may be distressing for younger children.
  • If your child would like to be close to the animals moving along the aisles, we recommend booking an aisle seat in the stalls.
  • The Lion King includes strobe lighting, theatrical smoke and fog effects.
  • Doors open an hour before each performance begins.
  • The theatre is wheelchair accessible via a double door on Wellington Street, to the left of the main entrance. From here, there is level access to the Stalls. The doorman will be able to open this entrance for you.
  • There are six wheelchair spaces available in the Stalls.
  • Lift facilities are available to all levels, though bear in mind that other than the Stalls, each level is spread out over a number of steps.
  • The Lyceum uses the Mobile Connect system, which aims to enhance the experience of visually impaired or hard-of-hearing audience members.
  • There are toilets on all levels, along with an accessible bathroom in the Stalls.
  • The Lyceum Theatre London has a theatre bar named The Ballroom, which is open 1.5 hours before the performance begins. There are other bars on all levels of the theatre for light refreshments too.
  • You can download the Ordertorium app too, which allows you to order your refreshments to be delivered directly to your seat in the auditorium.
  • If you're feeling peckish before or after the show, head to Kidadler favourite Bill's in Covent Garden, which has a great children's menu.

Getting there

  • The musical takes place in the Lyceum Theatre on Wellington Street, London, WC2E 7RQ.
  • The nearest stations are Covent Garden (Piccadilly line) and Charing Cross (for the Bakerloo and Northern lines and National Rail services), which are five and eight minutes away on foot respectively from this London theatre.
  • Lots of bus routes serve the area around the theatre. Routes X68, 1, 6, 11, 13, 23, 59, 68, 87, 168, 171, 172, 188 and 243 go to Aldwych. For buses to the Strand, you can use 4, 9, 15, 26, 76, 91, 139, 176 and 34.
  • Bear in mind the Lyceum Theatre is in London's Congestion Charge Zone.
  • Nearby car parks include the NCP London Covent Garden, Urban Parking Shelter Street, Q-Park Covent Garden and Q-Park Chinatown.
